Two Poems: ‘A room of one’s own’ & ‘Sunshine’

Photograph of the roots of a tree

A room of one’s own

You couldn’t begin to say the self
Before someone helps you finish —
Self-centred
Self-serving
Selfish

Sunshine

1
It isn’t easy
The topsoil of life
hardens
Flyaway seeds
of friendship, incidentally encountered
that just a few years ago
would have grown owing
to the spring of early youth and sunshine
of attention uninterrupted by shadows
of looming timelines. When time was still
languid. And heart open
Now, fall through
the cracks and wither
without taking any root
It isn’t easy

2
As the possibilities
turn brittle and the self-description
settles in, and my bark thickens
I miss you, and the liberties you took
