I felt naked in front of everyone when I first came out, and I can’t stress enough how much my male privilege has helped me out here. I don’t even know if people found it serious enough to consider it my identity instead of ‘a mere sexual preference’ or ‘a phase’ (always a classic dismissal).

August-September 2026: Commitment and Sexuality

Commitment can mean standing by a person, relationship, identity, cause, affiliation, or practice. In the context of sexuality, it can take many forms – from committed partnerships and chosen families to commitments to celibacy, safer sex, or other personal values and practices. Commitment is often seen as a cornerstone of relationships, but what gives it meaning? Is it defined by ceremonies, vows, or legal recognition, or by everyday actions and intentions? Commitment can deepen intimacy, trust, and wellbeing, but it can also become complex when different loyalties or identities come into conflict. This issue of In Plainspeak explores the many meanings, possibilities, and tensions of commitment in relation to sexuality

प्रतिबद्धता का मतलब है किसी की ओर या किसी रिश्ते, मकसद, पहचान, जुड़ाव या किसी काम के साथ लगातार जुड़े रहना और उसका साथ निभाना। उदाहरण के लिए, यौनिकता के संदर्भ में, इसका मतलब हो सकता है कि एक या एक से अधिक लोगों के साथ अपनी यौनिक साझेदारी को महत्व और प्राथमिकता देना। या यह भी हो सकता है कि किसी अभ्यास के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता, जैसे अविवाहित ज़िंदगी अपनाना या सुरक्षित यौन संबंध रखना, या फिर क्वीयर रिश्तों और चुने हुए परिवार के प्रति जुड़ाव और ज़िम्मेदारी निभाना। क्या किसी प्रतिबद्धता को जायज़ मानने के लिए किसी समारोह या किसी तरह के संकल्प की ज़रूरत होती है? प्रतिबद्धता का यौन आकर्षण, इच्छा, जुनून, आनंद और संतुष्टि पर क्या असर होता है? यह हमारे सुख-चैन और मानसिक भलाई को कैसे प्रभावित करता है? क्या होता है जब हमारी अलग-अलग प्रतिबद्धताएँ आपस में उलझ जाती हैं? और अगर, उदाहरण के लिए, किसी की यौन पहचान से जुड़ी प्रतिबद्धता उसकी जातीय पहचान, धार्मिक मान्यताओं या ऑनलाइन यौन बर्ताव से टकरा जाए, तब क्या होता है? क्या प्रतिबद्धता एक सीमा है, एक आज़ादी है, अपने आप को समझने की एक लगातार चलने वाली प्रक्रिया है, या कुछ और ही? ‘इन प्लेनस्पीक‘ का यह अंक प्रतिबद्धता और यौनिकता से जुड़े इन और दूसरे सवालों पर बात करता है।

October-November: Fantasy and Sexuality

Fantasy, sexual or otherwise, offers us a mental playground where we are free to play with our desires. When we leave we need take nothing with us. That’s what makes fantasy fun and exciting in a safe way. We engage with sexual fantasies in the space of our own minds, and through literature, movies, online games, the metaverse, and so on. Fantasy offers us the space to explore issues we may be hesitant to otherwise grapple with. What gives fantasies their charge? How do they influence our desires, pleasures and identities? Can fantasies lead to creating better futures and averting dystopian ones? Do they move us to seek enjoyable and safer sex, better SRHR services and products? Can fantasy inform our future? These are some of the questions we deal with in this issue of In Plainspeak.

अक्टूबर – नवम्बर: कल्पना और यौनिकता

कल्पनाएं, चाहे वे यौनिक किस्म की हो या और किसी तरह की, वे हमें मन की एक ऐसी जगह ले जाती हैं जहाँ हम अपनी इच्छाओं के साथ ख़ुलकर ख़ेल सकते हैं। जब हम अपनी काल्पनिक दुनिया से बाहर निकलते हैं,तब हम अपने साथ कुछ नहीं लेके जाते। इसकी वजह से कल्पनाएं और मज़ेदार और रोमांचक बन जाती हैं। हम यौन कल्पनाओं से अपने मन की दुनिया में जुड़ते हैं। इसके अलावा, साहित्य, फ़िल्मों, ऑनलाइन गेम्स, मेटावर्स और ऐसी ही दूसरी जगहों के ज़रिए भी हम इन कल्पनाओं को अनुभव करते हैं। कल्पनाएँ हमें उन मुद्दों और बातों को समझने और तलाशने की जगह देती हैं, जिनका सामना करने में हम आमतौर पर झिझक महसूस कर सकते हैं। कल्पनाओं में इतना आकर्षण कहाँ से आता है? वे हमारी इच्छाओं, सुख और हमारी पहचान को किस तरह प्रभावित करती हैं? क्या कल्पनाएँ हमें बेहतर भविष्य बनाने और एक भयावह भविष्य से बचने की दिशा में ले जा सकती हैं? क्या वे हमें ज़्यादा सुखद और सुरक्षित यौन संबंधों, बेहतर यौन एवं प्रजनन स्वास्थ्य और अधिकारों (SRHR) से जुड़ी सेवाओं और उत्पादों की तलाश करने के लिए प्रेरित कर सकती हैं? क्या हमारी कल्पनाएँ हमारे भविष्य को आकार देने में मदद कर सकती हैं? ये कुछ ऐसे सवाल हैं, जिन पर हम इस इन प्लेन्सपीक के अंक पर चर्चा करना चाह रहे हैं।
