Regional Cinema Corner – January 2015

This month, we are featuring a song called ‘Margazhi Poove’ from the movie May Madham (1994). The video is about a young woman’s desire for freedom and independence.

Margazhi is the Tamil month that usually falls between Dec 16 and Jan 14, and Margazhi Poove refers to flowers that blossom in this rainy month.

You can find the lyrics in tamil here. And here is a translation:

Flowers of the rain,
Shelter me in your lap.
I cannot fall asleep on a bed.
But in your lap I will find dreamy sleep.

I will open these flowers
And read them like books.
I will hop like a rabbit
Over the sprawling green meadows.
At dusk, I will walk alone
If I find a tea shop on the way
I will stop for a sip.
I may not have enjoyed the times that have passed
But I will enjoy the times that are to come
And drift with the clouds in the wind.

I have never walked along the banks of the Cauvery
I have never put my feet down on the sands of the seacoast
I have never spread my wings and taken flight in free skies
I have never gotten drenched in the warm rain
I have never walked alone on a street before
I have never been by myself before.
Never have I known the simple joys that a poor woman might have known.
