Media Corner: The hard life of Dhee: Bangladesh’s first lesbian comic book character – July 2017

What is it like to be part of a community that does not accept your sexual orientation? This is a familiar situation for many queer people worldwide. To highlight the realities of living as a queer person in Bangladesh, in 2015 the NGO Boys of Bangladesh (BoB) launched a comic strip about Dhee, a Bangladeshi woman in her twenties who realizes that she is lesbian. The strip is at once straightforward and nuanced – the signature comic book style belies the seriousness of the subject matter, which can at times be quite bleak.
