June Theme: Queering as a way of life
Not just an adjective but also a verb, an action, a doing word, to ‘queer’ something is to put it out of alignment with existing normative frameworks and envision transformative new modes of being and existing together. What can and does queering mean in terms of lived realities? How do people ‘queer’ their daily lives in overt and covert ways? What role can queering play in dismantling structures of politics, power, and privilege? How does the idea of a spectrum go beyond binaries that continue to define gender and sexual identity and expression, or romantic and sexual attraction, to include and embrace transgender, non-binary, aromantic, asexual, and other experiences that reject labels? How do we queer and redefine kinships in terms of dating, found families, friendships, parenting, and other relationships? What kinds of safe, inclusive, and self-affirming spaces let us explore and nurture queering as a way of life to the fullest? How can the crucial spaces where we spend a lot of time – our families, educational institutions, workplaces – themselves be queered, and also support queering? In this issue of In Plainspeak, we look at how queerness radically manifests in various arenas of our lives.
