Comprehensive Sexuality Education
Children and young people today have increased access to information and perspectives on gender, the body, growing up, consent, relationships, sex, sexuality and more.
But much of it is inaccurate, moralistic, or discriminatory. This leaves them misinformed or confused.
Schools, educators and parents understand that they have to talk to their children about these topics, but are not sure where to begin, or how to go about it. They worry about giving “too much” information, are hesitant or are themselves learning new information and unlearning things they have grown up with.
This is where TARSHI’s work on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) comes in. For over 25 years, we have trained educators and developed resources for schools and parents, on talking about gender, sexuality and safety in a sustained and engaging way. We also have books for children and young people on these topics.
What We Do
CSE Trainings
We conduct trainings, workshops, sensitisation sessions for educators, parents and service providers closely engaged with young people. We focus on creating a safe space to build clarity on CSE, enhance knowledge and perspective, and engage comfortably on gender, sexuality and safety-related issues. Online course on CSE
Our online course is specifically for teachers and educationists and aims to fill the gap created by the lack of teacher training on CSE. It seeks to equip professionals with skills to engage with sexual and reproductive health issues within a school setting, with confidence and ease. Learn more about our course here →
Resources
In this world of information overload, it may be hard to find information on gender, sexuality and safety that is not clinical or sensationalised! We have books, reports, FAQs, glossaries, and more, for young people, parents and educators, that are easy to understand and use. View all resources here →
Who We Work With
Schools and Educators
At TARSHI, we understand why educators may feel hesitant about sexuality education: many did not get this information growing up or in teacher training. While schools now understand the need for sexuality education, they must balance students’ needs with concerns from parents, staff and administration, and their cultural contexts. We work with schools and educators to strengthen their knowledge on sexuality education, build their skills, and support in implementing sexuality education in a sustained and practical way. Parents
TARSHI believes firmly that CSE is not only the domain of schools and educators: parents and concerned adults also need to be involved for gender, sexuality and safety education to be impactful for children and young people. We recognise that parents require resources and know-how to talk about gender and sexuality at home, to help their children grow into informed, healthy and happy adults who know their rights and respect others’ rights. Young People
What does it mean to say yes and no to things? How can I make my partner feel safe and respected? What is LGBTQ? Is abortion legal in India? These are questions young people have that they often don’t know whom to go to for answers. The Internet can throw a surprising mix of moralistic, inaccurate, non-judgmental information that can leave young people confused. Through sessions, stalls and workshops at colleges, TARSHI engages young people to learn about gender, sexuality and safety, in an interactive, safe and inclusive way.
Other CSE Stakeholders
TARSHI has contributed feedback and insights to Indian governments’ efforts towards school curricula on adolescent health and safety. We have documented the journey of sexuality and adolescent education programmes in India in a working paper. We were technical partners to UNFPA’s chatbot on sexual and reproductive health for young people. We have run campaigns with Feminism in India and Youth ki Awaaz on CSE, its importance for young people, and why teacher training on CSE is important.
