`No Loud Make-Up for Women Army Personnel`

The government has prohibited women personnel in the Nepal Army (NA) from using make-up items while on duty. Issuing a code of conduct, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) barred women army personnel from keeping their hair open, using dark-colored lipsticks and wearing heavy jewelry items, among others. Women army personnel have taken the code of conduct positively. ‘The provisions incorporated in the code of conduct does not discriminate between man and woman,’ said a woman officer. ‘So, we have to welcome this move.’

Govt Told to Give Shelter to Five AIDS Patients

The Delhi high court asked the Centre to provide shelter to five terminally ill HIV and AIDS patients, who approached court, seeking relief. A division bench asked the government to step in and ensure that the patients, who are also the petitioners, are provided shelter and are no longer abandoned. Earlier, the petitioners had highlighted their plight before court and pointed out that the tussle between different departments of the government had resulted in them being rendered homeless.

A Microblogger who has attracted more than 260,000 followers by claiming to be a Hangzhou prostitute writing about her antics with customers has turned out to be a 31-year-old married man who plagiarized foreign literature. The man, surnamed Lin, has been fined 500 yuan (US$80) by Hangzhou police for ‘disturbing social order’ after he uploaded a list of the bogus prostitute`s customers.

‘Is Your Son Gay?’ App Annoys Gays

Popular search engine Google has landed in a soup after launching a smartphone app that helps parents determine their son’s sexuality. The Android program ‘Is Your Son Gay?’ has recently hit the market and has outraged gay-rights groups, with one brandishing the app ‘ridiculous and horrifying’. The controversial app asks parents 20 questions, including ‘does he like to dress well?’, ‘does he like football?’, ‘does he like musical comedies?’ and ‘does he like Madonna?’ to help them discover the sexuality of their son. Meanwhile, the French developer of the app insisted that the concept was meant to be a humorous approach towards helping moms accept their sons’ homosexuality.

Interactive Session: Promoting Reproductive Health Education

Amendments to AIDS Law Pushed

Lawmakers are pushing for amendments to the 13-year-old AIDS Prevention and Control Law as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has spread faster, infecting seven Filipinos every 24 hours. Reps. Ma. Isabelle Climaco (Zamboanga City), Janette Garin (Iloilo), Jorge Banal (Quezon City), Arlene Bag-ao (Akbayan party-list), and Arnel Ty (LPGMA party-list) jointly authored House Bill 5312 or the proposed Comprehensive AIDS Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support Policy and Plan Act of 2011 that seeks to put in certain amendments to Republic Act 8054 in a bid to suppress the highly contagious disease that destroys the human body’s immune system.

Healthy Hobbies Seen as HIV Prevention

Encouraging married men to take up healthy recreational activities could be an effective way to prevent the spread of HIV through heterosexual intercourse, says Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih. He said that new HIV cases in Indonesia continued to increase year to year despite ongoing efforts to combat the viral infections. ‘Most of our HIV prevention programs have been prioritized for female commercial sex workers although in fact women within marriages or long-term relationships are at a greater risk of heterosexual transmission,’ Endang told a press conference.
