Teen Sex Stigma Hindering HIV Fight

The annual World AIDS Day, which falls December 01, 2014, is designed to remind people of the global campaign to make the next generation free of HIV and AIDS. The global effort, which has been carried on for the past 26 years, has produced a satisfactory result, as the number of new HIV infections worldwide has dropped significantly in the past few years. Globally, the rate of new HIV infections has fallen 13% in the past three years. Of the estimated 35 million people living with HIV in the world, more than 13 million are now receiving treatment. Aids-related deaths are at their lowest level since peaking in 2005, down by 35%, according to the UN Population Fund.

`Sex Workers Need to be Rehabilitated`

The female sex workers should not be deprived of their rights and there is a need to rehabilitate them, the experts from health, police, academician, politicians and women rights activists discussed in a workshop on ‘Legalising Commercial Sex Work: Impact on Violence Against Women’ held in the city on November 28, 2014. They emphasised that the women sex workers should not be treated as criminals but victims and there is a need for rehabilitating them by taking them out from commercial sex work to earn their livelihood by adopting some other profession.

China Drafts Its First Domestic Violence Law, but Rights Advocates Say it Falls Short

For nearly two decades, Chinese feminists, lawyers and rights advocates have called for laws to tackle violence in the family. This week the government published a draft of what would be China’s first national law addressing the issue, and while activists welcome it as a step forward, they also say it falls short of what is needed. The draft of the proposed Anti-Domestic Violence Law was published on November 25, 2014 by the State Council’s Legislative Affairs Office. Citizens have a month to tell the government what they think of the draft, after which it will enter the legislative calendar.

‘Victims of Abuse Should be Aware of Their Rights in Hospital’

Need Systematic Responses to Sexual Violence: CJI H L Dattu

Expressing concern over the security of women, Chief Justice of India H. L. Dattu said security of women can be achieved by not curbing their freedom and liberty but through a systematic response to sexual violence. ‘I would state that physical security of women is achieved by not curbing their freedom and liberty. We have to find systematic responses to sexual violence and we should not resort to the measures which will have adverse impact on them,’ Justice Dattu said while addressing the lawyers at a function on Law Day.

Pakistan is Breaking The Taboo And Addressing Sexual Health on Television With `Clinic Online`

Eleven early neo-natal deaths took place within 48 hours at a government hospital in Dharmapuri, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. This has turned the focus on women’s reproductive health. The women are mostly young, underweight and malnourished. Of the eleven mothers, one was just 19 years. Two others, 22 and 23, were into their third and fourth pregnancies respectively. Two others in their mid-20s suffered hypertension, forcing doctors to terminate the pregnancy. Most of them were severely anaemic, too. Each village health nurse, monitoring a population of 5,000, is also expected to supervise maternal health. ‘A village health nurse dedicated to maternal health will help,’ a senior health official said.

Doctors Blame Poor Sex Education And Increased Child Abuse For Rise in Teen STDs

While there are policies and awareness campaigns to prevent venereal infections among adults, the medical fraternity is concerned over the rise in Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) in children. The central government-run Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) alone has registered a steady increase in STD cases among children over the past four years. Doctors attribute the rise to increased child abuse and absence of sexual health programmes in school curriculum. It was noted that the STD cases had jumped from one to 4.9 per cent over the past four years, with the diseases ranging from Viral and Bacterial STIs, HIV, molluscum contagiosum, Cyanea acuminate, and herpes genitalis, to secondary syphilis.

These views were shared by participants at a dialogue on sexual reproductive health rights (SRHR) held at a local hotel on November 24, 2014. They expressed concern over parents who marry off their daughters before reaching puberty, saying these ‘elders’ should be held accountable by the government. They said every MNA and MPA should also be answerable to the government if a girl in their area becomes a victim of child marriage.

The Fight Against Victim Blaming

In light of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, particularly sexual violence against women on November 25, 2014, the latest most disturbing case was the rape of a five-month pregnant woman. Young girls, older women, pregnant women, women living with disabilities are all potential victims of sexual attacks of any kind. The National Commission of Violence against Women has already urged the government to have the emerging cases inspected by the UN Special Rapporteur dealing with violence against women, to help find a more systemic and systematic prevention and actions, given the estimated 20 women across ages and areas raped every day in Indonesia.

The sixth edition of the event demanded repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.
