Chemical Castration ‘Would Violate Human Rights of Sex Offenders’

Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) researcher Anggara demanded that the government and the House of Representatives drop the plan, the implementation of which, she said, would constitute a clear violation of human rights.

Thousands March for Marriage Equality, Gay Rights

India Festival to Show Homophobia Film

Sexual Aggression High Among Indian Youth: Study

A survey carried out by International Centre for Research on Women and two other organisations, found that 24.5% of the Indian men covered by it had engaged in sexual violence at some point, and most of them against an intimate partner. It found that sexual aggression, including teasing and sexual harassment, was high among Indian youth, while alcohol abuse was cited as the second leading influencing factor that led to rape.

Sex Workers Given Health Care, Vocational Training Support

More than four hundred young female sex workers in Ha Noi have received free healthcare services, and more than 120 have been given vocational training and support to start their own businesses, a conference heard last week. These results came from a three-year-project between the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and Plan International Vietnam. The project, targeting 400 female sex workers under 25 in the city, was launched in 2012. Under the VND9 billion (US$405,000) project, these women have been provided with health check-ups over the past three years.

Largest LGBT Conference in Asia to be Held in Taipei

The largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) conference in Asia will be held for the first time in Taiwan, with 300 activists in the LGBT community from 30 countries participating, the Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBT) Hotline Association announced on 26 October, 2015. Ashley Wu, a Director of the association, said the 6th ILGA-Asia Regional Conference will be held at the Chientan Overseas Youth Activity Centre in Taipei from October 28 to 30, 2015. ILGA stands for International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Trans and Intersex Association.

Madras High Court Recommends Castration for Child Sex Offenders

The Madras High Court has recommended castration as a punishment for those who rape children in order to deter sexual assaults on minors. In an order issued in connection with the case of a British national accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy from Tamil Nadu, the high court acknowledged its recommendation could seem ‘barbaric, retrograde, stone-aged and inhuman’ but said traditional laws were not enough to cope with such crimes.

Madras High Court Calls for 'Age-Specific' Sex Education

Indonesia Urged to Repeal Aceh's New Islamic Criminal Code

Rights group Amnesty International has called on Indonesian authorities to immediately repeal Aceh's Islamic Criminal Code, which came into effect on 23 October, 2015, arguing that punishing people for having consensual sex is ‘despicable.’ The new criminal code in the country's westernmost province, also known as Qanun Jinayat, allows for people who engage in consensual sexual relationships outside marriage, or in same-sex relationships, to receive up to 30 or 100 lashes, respectively.
