Teacher Wins China Milestone Claim for HIV-Related Job Discrimination

An aspiring teacher in south-east China has become the country`s first person to win compensation for an HIV - related employment discrimination, according to state media reports. The ruling presents a milestone in the country`s long-running effort to overcome its notorious employment discrimination problems and intense social stigma associated with the disease. ‘HIV - infected people face this kind of situation every day, but those who really take it to court are extremely rare,’ said Cheng Yuan of the Nanjing-based anti-discrimination NGO Tianxiagong. ‘This will encourage more people who are infected with AIDS and are discriminated against to seek protection under the law.’

In Yogya, Sex Workers Say Crackdown Won’t Save Us

Prostitutes and activists in Yogyakarta are calling on the government not to prosecute men who pay for sex to protect the rights of women. The chairwoman of Yogyakarta Women’s Sex Workers Association (P3SY), Sarmi, said at a conference in Yogyakarta that the criminalization of the clients of prostitutes would decrease the bargaining power and income of sex workers. Criminalization would also drive prostitution further underground, which would hinder HIV and AIDS education and mitigation programs, Sarmi said.

KPAI Calls for Sex Education Amid Continuing Reports of Child Rape

The Indonesian Commission on Child Protection (KPAI) has urged the government and the House of Representatives to pass regulations that will allow for sex education for children at schools to prevent them from sexual assault. The KPAI blamed rampant cases of sexual abuse on children’s lack of basic knowledge about sex. The commission said the lack of knowledge had made children prone to sexual abuse committed by individuals close to them, including family members or teachers.

Law Enforcers Participate in Sexual Exploitation of Children

UNICEF estimated that 30 percent of female prostitutes in Indonesia were under 18 years old and that around 40,000 to 70,000 children in Indonesia have been victims of sexual exploitation. Indonesia has signed, but has yet to ratify, the optional protocol of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.

Activists Blast Police in Aceh for Rape Case Stance

Women’s rights activists in Aceh have urged the chief of police in Simeulue district to show more seriousness in addressing a case in which three policemen allegedly drugged and raped a 19-year-old woman. ‘The investigators and public prosecutors should have been more scrupulous in finding the elements of force in the rape case, especially since the victim was previously forced to take methamphetamine,’ Khairani told the Jakarta Globe.

Diverse Sexuality Education Proposed, Verma Stress on Unbiased School Lessons

The J.S. Verma committee, set up after the Delhi gang rape, has suggested introduction of sexuality education in schools which should also cover different sexual orientations. The panel, which submitted a 631-page report to the government on January 23, 2013, said a ‘scientific’ approach could change prevailing perceptions and bring about a sense of responsibility while dealing with the opposite gender. It recommended that sexuality education be made an integral part of ‘each Indian student’s curriculum’ and delivered by trained teachers assisted by counsellors trained in child psychology.

IAA Plans Drive to Remove Gender Bias

Sex Education Cannot be Ignored in Modern Indonesian Society

With the recent uproar over judge M. Daming Sunusi`s controversial rape joke, it is highlighted once again how little Indonesia’s society is educated about sex and its implications. The problem is not that sexuality education is not being taught in schools, the problem is how sexuality education is treated. Elements of sexuality education can be seen from elementary school to university in biology and religious subjects - sometimes it is mentioned in physical education subjects - but even with exposure, it is never talked about explicitly.
