Global funding for research and work around HIV issues has dried out over the past decade or so, with official statistics declaring it a slowing-down affliction; according to reports, it is a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unaids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/country\/documents\/IND_narrative_report_2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declining trend<\/a>\u201d, with a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.avert.org\/professionals\/hiv-around-world\/asia-pacific\/india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 19% drop<\/a>\u00a0in new HIV infections between 2005 and 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The mid-month issue features Sankhya Bommana\u2019s Voices article on <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/the-serious-dangers-of-high-risk-grouping-in-hiv-and-aids-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the pitfalls<\/a> of how HIV has been tackled in India. Look out for <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/building-solidarity-amongst-diverse-and-marginalised-communities-at-sangram-sangli-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Part 2<\/a> of SANGRAM\u2019s Voices article on intersectionality in practice between marginalised groups in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p>Our Interview this month is with Kiran Deshmukh, President of VAMP Plus, on <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/interview-kiran-deshmukh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negotiating HIV in sex work<\/a>. The interview, in Hindi, has been edited by Dipika Srivastava. We also republish a <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/interview-anjali-gopalan-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video interview of Anjali Gopalan <\/a>from our archives.<\/p>\n<p>The Blog Roll contains curated articles from around the Web: <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/charlie-sheen-put-a-spotlight-on-hiv-and-sex-workers-but\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what the mainstream conversation is missing<\/a> about Charlie Sheen\u2019s coming out as HIV-positive, <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/positive-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alliance India\u2019s note<\/a> on World AIDS Day this year, two reminiscences: one, of <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/an-indefinite-sentence-love-homophobia-and-the-aids-panic-in-1980s-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siddharth Dube recounting<\/a> how homophobia affected the upper class Delhi man in the 1980s, and two, of a white medical NGO worker\u2019s experiences with<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/a-world-away-hiv-in-central-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> HIV in Central Asia<\/a>; also, Edwin Cameron, a Justice of South Africa\u2019s Supreme Court of Appeal explains <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/criminalising-hiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">why criminalising HIV is counter-productive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And an editorial bonus: <a href=\"http:\/\/pad.ma\/LZ\/player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">watch Vivek Diwan<\/a> talk about the LGBT movement, the law, and its connections with HIV.<\/p>\n<p>In the first issue of the month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/issue-in-focus-decoupling-deviance-and-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mona Mishra<\/a> gave us an Issue In Focus overview of the journey India has been through with HIV so far.<\/p>\n<p>Three Voices articles echoed various concerns around HIV in India: Edwina Pereira wrote about HIV-positive children and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/plainly-speaking-in-the-best-interest-of-children-living-with-hiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their sexual rights<\/a>; human rights activist organisation, SANGRAM, explored\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/building-solidarity-amongst-diverse-and-marginalised-communities-at-sangram-sangli-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intersectionality in practice<\/a>\u00a0between various marginalised groups including sex workers, HIV-positive people, MSM (men who have sex with men), and transpeople; and Siddharth Narrain <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/hiv-and-aids-prevention-lgbt-rights-and-the-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charted out<\/a>\u00a0the connections between the LGBT movement and HIV in India.<\/p>\n<p>Kristin Francoeur\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/book-review-birth-in-the-age-of-aids-women-reproduction-and-hivaids-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reviewed<\/a>\u00a0the book,\u00a0<em>Birth in the Age of AIDS: Women, Reproduction and HIV\/AIDS in India<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>by Cecilia Van Hollen \u2013 a handy guide for activists, researchers, and others involved in working with HIV and AIDS issues in India.<\/p>\n<p>Brushstrokes featured Sunil Gupta\u2019s photographic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/brushstrokes-everyday-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rendering of everyday lives\u00a0<\/a>of children living with HIV, and the Video Page had HIV-positive guys\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/video-page-hiv-positive-guys-read-mean-dating-app-messages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retorting humorously<\/a>\u00a0to mean dating app messages.<\/p>\n<p>The TARSHI Corner is an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/stopstigma-this-worldaidsday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HIV myth-dispelling series<\/a>\u00a0of posters we created, and a FAQs page clears the air about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/faqs-routes-of-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">routes of HIV transmission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The end of a year is time to take stock: please take a few minutes to take <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/forms\/6n3Hm6mN4X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this survey<\/a> on what you think about <em>In Plainspeak. <\/em>We\u2019d love to hear what you have to say about the eMagazine.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also excited to announce that\u00a0<em>In Plainspeak<\/em>\u00a0is going to get an all-new look in the coming weeks.
