Since the turn of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, Women\u2019s Day Observances had been held on different dates in different parts of the world. It was only in 1977 that the United Nations declared March 8 as International Women\u2019s Day. The official UN theme for Women\u2019s Day this year is <em>Equality for Women is Progress for All<\/em>. But what does it really mean for the women\u2019s movement? Who are these women?<\/p>\n<p>Vani Subramanian, a women\u2019s rights activist, shares with us her understanding of this in the women&#8217;s movement in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/i-column-woman-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i>I column<\/i><\/a> and manages to leave us both shaken and stirred.\u00a0You will understand the precise usage of this phrase once you read her piece.<\/p>\n<p>Shweta Krishnan, a writer and a gender rights activist focuses on the changing definition of a \u2018woman\u2019 in Indian society and about the complex system of sanctions on reproductive health services in a hetero-normative society in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/issue-in-focus-beyond-simple-formulas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i>Issue in Focus <\/i><\/a>section.<\/p>\n<p>This month\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/interview-maya-rao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Interview<\/i> <\/a>section features TARSHI\u2019s Jasmine George\u2019s interview with Maya Krishna Rao, an actor, dancer and a teacher. As a performing artist, Maya speaks about her involvement with women\u2019s issues using various art forms.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Review<\/i> section features film maker and activist Bishakha Datta\u2019s review of the film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/reel-review-blue-warmest-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Blue Is The Warmest Color\u2019<\/a> (2013). It also includes Rupsa Mallik\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/review-justice-spectator-sports1-reflections-one-billion-rising-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reflections on the One Billion Rising for Justice campaign<\/a> that explores why a franchise-model for protest might not work when it comes to demanding for justice.<\/p>\n<p>Surbhi Dewan, an independent documentary filmmaker and researcher, writes about her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/voices-mirroring-reality-conversation-sabiha-sumar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversation with Sabiha Sumar<\/a>, a Pakistani filmmaker about her new film \u2018Good Morning Karachi\u2019, her latest short documentary film \u2018Saving Face\u2019, the status of women in Pakistan and her personal experience of having lived in Pakistan, United States, and India in the <i>Voices<\/i> section.\u00a0This section, also features feminist, queer rights activist and Physics lecturer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/feminism-science-teaching-learning-science-making\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Chayanika Shah\u2019s interview by Vivek Vellanki <\/a>of\u00a0the Regional Resource Centre for Elementary Education\u00a0where she talks about her experiences of being a woman in the largely male dominated field of pure sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Hindi<\/em> section has a piece by our very own Dipika Srivastava; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/hindi-women-we-are-proud-of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tribute to women who have contributed to improving lives of women <\/a>as well as worked for women\u2019s rights in the region. Women pioneers Akka Mahadevi, Bhawari Devi, Bhikhaiji Rustom Cama, Ismat Chughtai, Jhamak Ghimire,\u00a0Mary Roy, Savitribai Phule, Sampatpal Devi and Thockchom Ramani are celebrated in this month\u2019s Hindi section.<\/p>\n<p>In <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/brushstrokes-medusa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brushstrokes<\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>the Visual Corner<i>,<\/i> we have Medusa \u2013 a charcoal piece by artist James Scott Edwards, along with a poem by Anisha Dutt (TARSHI) depicting the power of beauty.<\/p>\n<p>We have a short film in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/video-page-smile-kalki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Video <\/i><\/a>section \u2013 \u2018Smile&#8217;\u00a0by Kalki Subramanium, Founder\/Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sahodari.org\/\">Sahodari Foundation<\/a> based in Chennai, India about some happy moments in the lives of transsexual women in Chennai.<\/p>\n<p>Look out for to the blog roll section in the middle of the month to read about articles posted on other blogs.
