It is diverse, it is nuanced, and, as Shweta Krishnan writes, has the <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/literature-political-potential\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political potential<\/a> to liberate people by allowing us to re-imagine the world and explore all its possibilities. Kiran Bhat, an\u00a0author and polyglot\u00a0who speaks 12 languages, and has written in English, Kannada, Spanish, Portuguese, and Mandarin says, \u201cA story is something we tell each other, often based in fiction, but sometimes based in truth. We use a story to connect ourselves from one person to another. We use a story to encourage, enliven, and to inspire.\u201d He speaks with Shikha Aleya about having lived all over the world connecting with people, and <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/interview-kiran-bhat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what a story is and can do<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A story brings us close to the characters in it so we can feel their pain, understand their struggles and delight in their successes. Sheena D\u2019Lima reviews the novel <em>Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows<\/em> about how the act of these widows living in Southall, London, writing their own stories uncovers<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/book-review-erotic-stories-for-punjabi-widows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> hitherto untold tales<\/a> about women\u2019s bodies, sexualities, and desire, as well as the subversive power of telling such stories. Rashmi Gopi reviews Manto\u2019s short story <em>License<\/em> that exposes the patriarchal control exercised by society to <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/manto-license-politics-of-sexuality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curb a woman\u2019s desires<\/a>, her movements, and in the end her whole existence. In a similar vein, Pooja Priyamvada writes about <em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> and<a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/the-handmaids-tale-women-and-unwomen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0questions of choice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Asmi reveals how reading literature <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/windows-sexuality-literature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened a window<\/a> to sexuality and to understanding the intertwining of gender, sexuality and religion in our cultural context. Shilpa Sachdeva <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/the-moment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrates sexuality<\/a> in a poem.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have stringent criteria about what counts as literature while others are more flexible. So while pulp fiction may not be edifying or uplifting or considered great literature, it did and still does a great deal to popularise reading. Of course, the lurid covers help! In the Brushstrokes section, take a look at a <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/brushstrokesthe-lurid-covers-of-20th-century-pulp-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collection of covers of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century pulp fiction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After struggling with the ethics of <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/finding-feminism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telling other people\u2019s stories<\/a>, Surbhi Dewan finds that feminist methodology offers a guiding framework for ethical documentary filmmaking. Some stories get told ethically, some badly, and some not at all. Urvashi Butalia makes a case for <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/video-page-feminist-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feminist publishing<\/a> and telling alternate stories and histories that represent marginalised voices. The Hindi section carries a <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/hindi-the-social-boundaries-of-masculinity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">translation<\/a> of Abhiruchi Chatterjee\u2019s review of Vasudhendra\u2019s <em>Mohanaswamy<\/em>, a book originally written in Kannada about the protagonist Mohana growing up gay in rural Karnataka within the multiple and intersecting dimensions of class, caste, sexuality, rural-urban divide, education and language among others. In the Book Corner read about Saba Dewan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himalmag.com\/chronicling-courtesans-tawaifnama-saba-dewan-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Tawaifnama<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>a book about the forgotten history of courtesans in colonial and post-colonial India.<\/p>\n<p>As we see through this issue of <em>In Plainspeak,<\/em> stories have in them the power of exposing brutal truths about society and therefore also bring with them the possibility of reform, change, and hope, and when not possible, temporarily escaping into other worlds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the mid-month<\/strong> issue Anil Pradhan writes about <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/contemporary-indian-gay-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how contemporary Indian \u2018gay romance\u2019 fiction<\/a> challenges mainstream literary discourses of love, desire, and eroticism, and Aditi Padiyar recounts how <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/yaarana-befriending-queer-literature-and-hoshang-merchant-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attending Hoshang Merchant\u2019s classes<\/a> and listening to his personal narratives catalysed a shift in her perspective. We also have a Hindi translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/devdutt-interview-hindi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our interview with author Devdutt Pattanaik<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the blogrolls section we have an article that focuses on how <a href=\"https:\/\/tarshi.net\/inplainspeak\/flipping-the-script-4-reasons-fan-fiction-is-a-feminist-pursuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fan fiction is a feminist pursuit<\/a> and gives a voice, choice and an identity to people who may not otherwise find themselves represented well or represented at all.
