Sexuality Counselling Skills Training
December 7-10, 2011, New Delhi, India
TARSHI conducted a first of its kind Sexuality Counselling Skills Training that combined an off-site eLearning component with a four-day on-site
training programme. The aim of this training was to equip practitioners, professionals and individuals who work on sexuality and related issues with
five basic counselling skills so that they can do their ‘people-related’ work better. The training was based on participatory and practice-based
methodology. The medium of instruction was English.
This was a unique learning opportunity for selected participants who were offered Module 1 of TARSHI’s eLearning course on sexuality with the aim of having all participants on the same page with respect
to their understanding of Sexuality and Gender. This was followed by a four-day on-site skills training to integrate the two main components of the
training: Sexuality and Counselling.
The on-site training component focused on counselling skills in sexuality. The training included:
- Introduction to Counselling
- Five Core Counselling Skills
- Active Listening
- Paraphrasing and Reflecting
- Validating
- Being Non-Judgmental
- Maintaining Boundaries
- Values Clarification
- Ethics in Practice
- Burnout Prevention and Counsellor Care
Participants - The 16 participants included individuals who have been working as counsellors, trainers, lecturers,
researchers and activists on issues of mental health and counselling, sexuality, gender, reproductive health, HIV, research etc. They came from
different parts of India: Delhi, Orissa, Kolkata, Meerut, and Vadodara, and Indonesia.
Faculty - The resource persons were from within TARSHI and also included well known therapists and counselling
practitioners.
